Hunger Games Surprises Me

I went and watched The Hunger Games Friday afternoon and have been thinking about what I thought of it the last day or so.  I have to say I liked the movie a lot and got caught up in the storyline right away.  As I watched it I realized throughout most of the movie I was just SO angry at the whole civilization depicted in the movie.  How could citizens let the government do something so horrific and terrible to their kids for the amusement of the rich people in the capital? I guess it’s not so different than the genocide going on in parts of our world today.

I found myself hating characters for being part of the system making teenagers slaughter each other.  I hated characters that were even written to be likable like Haymitch (Woody Harrelson) and Cinna (Lenny Kravitz).  I don’t think I have had this strong of an emotional reaction to a movie in a very long time.

The main characters Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta (Josh Hutchersen) were pretty convincingly played and kudos to them.  Having never read the book I didn’t really know what to expect.  Katniss was so emotionally detached and Peeta wore his emotions on his sleeve.  Another character and performance that stuck out in my head was Cato (Alexander Ludwig) who was very ruthless and Lord Of The Flies.

All and all I have to say I enjoyed the movie a lot and eagerly await the sequel.  I might even try to read the next two books that have been rotting on my Kindle for several months as I wasn’t sure if they would even be interesting.
