Charlie McDermott In The Middle

If you are not watching Charlie McDermott in ABC’s The Middle you should be because the show and Charlie are plainly awesome. This is one the greatest families on television. The show goes out of the way to try to tell the east and west coast people how basic everyday people live here in “The Middle” of the country.

What makes this show awesome is the characters, especially the kids, SO exaggerated. Sue is the kid at high school no one notices because she blends in so well because nothing stands out about her. Brick is the weird kid that people don’t get that is too intelligent for his own good but doesn’t understand or care about other kids. Frankie is the mom that is always hounding the kids and her husband so much that they need to get things done but in the end winds up sounding like a crazy person. Mike is the dad that doesn’t sweat the little things and is just going through the motions trying to stay calm because his wife has enough crazy for the both of them.

That leaves us with Charlie’s character Axl Heck. At quick glance Axl appears to be a lazy teen that only cares about himself and his own personal world. Over the last 2.5 seasons we have actually learned that it’s a very well-practiced act. Axl cares about the people around him and is actually very smart. The best example is there was an episode this year where the parent were freaked out how Axl was going to interact with a college recruiter and Axl nailed the interview with a side of himself he doesn’t let other people see because it conflicts with the cool reputation he has worked so hard to maintain. The show pokes fun at a lot of teenage guys by keeping Axl lounging around the house in his socks and boxers. There is an episode where Axl comes home fully layered in regular clothes including a jacket and the cameras cut away from him for a nano second and when it cut back he is in his boxers watching TV. No human can eject clothing that fast. Charlie plays this character so well.

On a personal side Charlie McDermott seems like a really sweet guy himself. He has stopped posting much on Twitter these days but on his Tumblr he made a post a year ago that made just go “awwww” after reading it. He talks about what it’s like seeing himself on TV and how he feels uncomfortable being part of Hollywood.  You will see on his Tumblr he is very interested in astronomy.

Douglas Smith May Be In The Sea Of Monsters

I just heard a rumor that Douglas Smith (HBO's Big Love) may be in talks to co star in Percy Jackson And The Seas Of Monsters along side Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson).  Rumor has it he will be playing Percy's cyclops half brother, Tyson.

We haven't seen much of Douglas Smith since Big Love ended but he has lots of other things to keep him busy.  He is a pretty good musician and was the lead singer for the band His Orchestra for a while.  I don't know if they are still making music as some of the member have parted ways.  Douglas also appears to hang out with his brother Gregory Smith (ABC's Rookie Blue) quite a bit as Greg tweets pics of each  other sometimes when on vacation and stuff.

He is a great actor and i can't wait to see him on the big screen once again.

You can see His Orchestra's video "Black Coffin" at: http://youtu.be/JJomoFe-HfY

Matt Bomer Leaves His Closet

The star of USA Network's TV show White Collar came out to the media on Saturday.  It's really nice to see public people who are not wearing pink feathers or speedos coming out.  The public sees the extreme spectrum of gay people in pride parades and arrest reports for people having sex in parks.  It's nice to see someone that better represent the gay community.

You can check out a little more of the story over at ABC News:  http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2012/02/white-collars-matt-bomer-reveals-hes-gay/

Bigotry Alive And Well In The Midwest

I was sitting at a casino here in Kansas City the other day eating lunch at the giant buffet and listening to all the people around me.  I have to say for the most part I really like Kansas and Missouri as a place to live except for one thing.  Hate and bigotry here seem to be on the rise again.  I heard several people talking about the state of the economy and how they wouldn’t vote for “NoBama” and another who said “Obama Ben Laden.”  The ignorant political views aside the sheer bigotry and ignorance from these people was staggering.

The waitress who was really nice I thought at first was adapting her personality depending on who she was taking care of.  When she helped me she was using a twang free and what I would consider normal accent, keeping in mind I grew up in Michigan up north.  The second she waited on the rednecks behind me that were being total bigots she flipped over to a bit of southern drawl and started using the word “yawl.”  It was so bizarre.

There was what I thought was a sweet old couple eating beside me.  Things got ugly when they started talking about politics.  The old man declared they would be voting for whoever was running against the black guy and he didn’t really use the words “black guy.”   Bigotry aside for a second he was telling his wife who she was going to vote for.

People on the coasts are enjoying a little better situation as far as minorities being excepted because they are so integrated into the society there.  Here in “the middle” like Kansas City there is still an invisible wall between black, latino, and white communities.

Bigotry is alive and well here in Kansas City and it’s embarrassing.

Dane DeHaan Kills It In Chronicle

I just got back from watching the movie Chronicle and I have to say I was very impressed with the special effects and the acting especially actor Dane DeHaan. The premise of the movie is three high school students find some technology that I assumed was alien as it is never explained in the movie where it came from or what it is. After being in contact with the technology the guys discover they are telekinetic, basically being able to move objects with your mind. The two supporting characters played by Alex Russel and Michael B Jordan have to focus a lot of energy to control their limited powers but the character Andrew (DeHaan) is a natural at controlling it and quickly becomes a lot more powerful than the other two.

Andrew right before all this happened decided to film (Chronicle) his life and that is how we get the title for the film. There is a huge problem. Andrew is a very shy kid that has been bullied his entire life by schoolmates and his alcoholic father. To add fuel to the fire Andrew’s mom is critically ill and the family can’t afford the meds she needs to fight the horrible pain she is in. This made this film kind of hard to watch because I identify too much with being an outsider and I could tell where this story was going and exactly how it was going to end.

I have to say I enjoyed this movie a lot and I was shocked at how well Dane DeHaan performed in this movie and now that I looked at his IMDB profile I know where I have seen him before. He was Timbo in the last season of True Blood who was part of a hick family of werepanthers. Back in 2010 he was also in HBO’s series In Treatment as Jesse.

This guy is just amazing and defiantly a talent to watch in the future.

Here is the trailer for the movie Chronicle:
